I had the opportunity to hunt with Jamy Traut Hunting Safaris for a leopard and various plains game species. I used a new (for me!) bullet that, because of its excellent performance, I decided to review after-the-fact. Hornady‘s ELD-X worked perfectly on Springbok, Wildebeest and Zebra. It also dropped a big Tom leopard! You can check out my review here.
Carol and Kerry O’Day have sent me quite a few rifles to review. Their firearms work really well. I once reviewed a first firearm for another custom builder and it didn’t work well. I wrote that. They still don’t speak to me. Carol’s and Kerry’s firearms work. The rifles shoot straight, are light (I need that more and more these days), and they don’t have objectionable recoil – even the .416 Taylor they built for me. This 7mm Remington Magnum did the same. Check it out here.
I guess it shows what kind of sense of humor I have, that I really enjoy writing articles in the ‘Things That Don’t Suck’ series for TheTruthAboutGuns. My latest is on Nalpak’s Tuffpak firearm carrier. Frances and I were once again at the Government Training Institute‘s shooting range. We used the Tuffpak to transport three rifles and a PDW pistol. Its capacity bodes well for when we use it this November to carry three rifles for our Mozambique Safari with Mark Haldane’s Zambeze Delta Safaris! You can check out the review here.
“As usual, I was anxiously waiting for my SKB double-rifle guncase to appear after my flight from Johannesburg into Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport. I breathed a sigh of relief as the agent brought it into the check-in room on the other side of the glass partition.
“If my brother had not grabbed my arm, I would have been pounding on the glass a few seconds later. Instead of placing the guncase onto the empty spaces on the shelf, or setting it down on the floor, she raised it up to chest height and dropped the case onto the concrete. I guess she was making it crystal clear that she was anti-hunting…
“That episode made me start wondering if there was another option available that might act to camouflage my firearms a bit better than my beloved SKB carrier…”
On Sunday, March 1st, Frances and I head to the Government Training Institute‘s facilities in Barnwell, South Carolina. (No, we are NOT going there for the Presidential Primary!) Chris Lux and the other folks at GTI have given us permission to bring a ton-of-stuff out to review on their ranges.
“What ‘ton-of-stuff’ is being lugged to GTI for reviews?”
Our design is to ‘walk’ the rifles out to target distances of up to 700 yards. Cannot wait to shoot all of the firearms, and watch Frances do the same. I am also pumped to see how the firearms, Tuffpak, bench, fieldrest and ear protection perform.
Yes, you are correct. A magical weekend of shooting sh** is about to happen for the Arnolds!
Stay tuned for a ‘ton’ of review articles at TheTruthAboutGuns.com, complete with photographs and videos of each of the products being reviewed!
(Please excuse the plastic. There aren’t corpses, we’re just having some painting done in my trophy room/office.)
Frances and I are in Dallas for the Dallas Safari Club’s annual Convention. We are here to compile video interviews with many of the top names in the hunting and shooting sports. From custom firearm producers like Kerry and Carol O’Day of MG Arms, to Outfitters such as Mark Haldane of Zambeze Delta Safaris to Hornady’s Neal Emery, we will be finding out about some of the newest trends and opportunities for shooters and hunters. We will be posting our videos at TheTruthAboutGuns.com. Stay tuned for what should be a great set of interesting interviews.
Hey, All. If you’re the least bit interested in long-range shooting, please check out my latest article at TheTruthAboutGuns.com. You can find it here.
As an important side note, the ‘good friend’ in the article is Ron Differ. Ron and I have shared hunting trips and times at the range. He is one of my best friends and his name was in the pre-Editor version of this article! Thanks again Ron for introducing me to GTI!
